The right trench, dug once

Almost every project on a plot needs a trench: a water line to the house, an electricity or internet cable, irrigation for a garden, a drain from a roof or terrace, a feed to a pool or a water tank. A good trench is straight, to the right depth and width, with a clean bottom.

We dig with a mini excavator using a narrow bucket, which keeps trenches tight and disturbs less of your garden. We place the soil to one side, keep topsoil separate from stones where you ask, and backfill and compact once your plumber or electrician has laid the pipe or cable.

We also dig out old, broken or abandoned pipes, and expose lines that leak so they can be repaired. Depth, bedding material and pipe types come from your electrician, plumber or the utility; we dig to what they specify. See septic tank excavation and water tanks and cisterns for related work.

How the job works

1. Plan the route

   We walk the route with you or your installer and mark it out, checking for existing pipes, cables, walls and roots.

2. Dig

   The mini excavator digs to depth and width, with the soil placed alongside.

3. Installer lays the line

   Your plumber or electrician lays the pipe or cable and any bedding material.

4. Backfill and tidy

   We backfill in layers, compact and leave the ground level. Extra soil can be spread or hauled away.
