Digging the hole for your pool

Every pool starts with a hole, and getting the hole right saves time and money later. Your pool builder or engineer gives the shape, depth and levels; we dig to them, including the extra room needed around the shell for working space and the gravel or concrete base.

A mini excavator is ideal for this: it gets into gardens and through gates where a large digger cannot go, and it digs accurately. The catch is the spoil. A pool 8 by 4 metres and 1.5 metres deep removes about 48 cubic metres of ground, and once dug the soil takes up around a quarter more space. That is a lot of trailer loads, so plan early where the soil goes: spread on your land, used for levelling or hauled away.

Corfu ground can be soft soil, clay or hard rock, sometimes in the same hole. If we hit rock or groundwater, we tell you immediately so you and your builder can decide. Once the pool shell is built, we come back for the backfill around the pool. Pool works normally need approval, which your builder or engineer handles.

How the job works

1. Plans and setting-out

   Your pool builder or engineer gives the dimensions, levels and position. We check access and where the soil will go.

2. Strip and dig

   We strip the topsoil, then dig in layers to depth, checking levels as we go.

3. Trim and hand over

   The bottom and sides are trimmed and handed over to the pool builder.

4. Clear the spoil

   Soil is spread or hauled away, and we return for the backfill when the shell is done.
